So... about those ducks....

When 4 little duck ducks came into my life, to say I was unprepared would be an understatement. Not only was I unprepared for where to put them, I was unprepared for the maintenance. It probably would have been easier, had I had a nice little run for them, with a small coop and an easy to clean pool.

But that's not what I had. I had a half finished chicken coop, 18 chickens in a playpen in my dining room and no place to put anyone.

Immediately, we doubled the size of the run, which still seems pretty small when you consider how big chickens really get. Once everyone could go outside, to relieve ourselves from chicken dust and smelly wet pine bedding, we just sort of tossed everyone in together. Ducks on one side of a partition, chickens wherever they damn well wanted.

That worked pretty well until about a week ago, when we got back from vacation. Seth took care of my ducks/chickens for me, and did a fairly good job. What he didn't do (because he didn't know he should) was to keep the bedding dry.

When I got back, it was a MESS. The ducks had obviously knocked over their water 1828 times and mix that with some duck crap and some heat. mmm... it was a lovely mixture. I'd had it, and immediately removed the partition.

It took about twelve 3 gallon buckets and a wheelbarrow full to get all the bedding out. Somewhere in there, I realized, I was overwhelmed. I'd just had enough. I had other things that needed doing, and "Raising Ducks in 15 Minutes A Day" was just not happening for me.

Add to that fact, that I was getting very little payout. After 8 weeks, they were still terrified of me (even tho the biggest one, my favorite, wouldn't freak out if I picked him up). They would run and squawk their heads off, I couldn't even pet the damn ducks.

I finally pulled up my big girl panties, and asked Gene if he minded if I found them a new home, and he said he did not mind and would not be offended. He kind of agreed with me, but really, he wanted something in return as we had so much invested into them.

{Playing for the last time in their pool}

I put an ad on a local classified online, and soon had a reply from a lady not far from here. I made it clear, that these ducks needed a HOME that was SAFE. NOT meat birds. Period. Only I didn't sound that nice.

She assured me that she loved her animals, and that they took good care of them.

I admit, the first thing I did was check her out on facebook to see if there were any hints to her personality. I certainly didn't want to see a posting saying "Oh, a great big bowl of duck soup for supper - and free to boot!!"

What I found was a photo of their full grown goose, in the bathtub. What clenched it was they call their goose "Goose Goose". I call the ducks, "duck duck" and the chickens "chick chick" so it was kind of meant to be.

In return, she offered up two laying hens. Gene thought it was a splendid idea. I just felt rotten either way.

On Sunday morning, we made the exchange at a lake half way between here and there. She brought Goose Goose with her so that we could meet her. She was cute btw. Duck Ducks found a new home, and I think about them and hope that they are happier than where they were.

:'(

Later that day, I spent some time working on the window on the coop. One of the new hens started acting kinda crazy, it took me a good hour or two to figure out, she wanted to lay an egg!! I hurried and finished the temporary nesting box I was making (out of an old shelf that I was getting ready to toss in the trash), and picked her up and set her in it.

Immediately she started scratching around.

A couple hours later, I went to check and I had this:

TWO eggs!

I kinda feel like a liar tho. I didn't do any of the work. Just brought them home and they squeezed out a couple eggs. *sigh*

Anyway, I get why it's fun, it's kind of like an easter egg hunt every day, wondering if there'll be one out there. We are up to 4 now, and that's just 2 chickens. Thinking by the time I have around 18-19 chickens laying eggs this fall, I'll be sharing egg recipes left and right.

No, I don't wanna be in the egg business.

However, I might be against my will.

Chick Flicks

Never try to write a post at 11:30 pm when you're groggy and really wanting to get to bed.

"I have a coop. My coop is red. The coop has a door. It's a little door. I like chickens." Yeah about that exciting. I'll try to ramp up the wit a little bit over the next few days to make up for it.

"I'm so disappointed in you."

This is my third grade teacher, Miss Jones. She's an angry disappointed old woman.

Oh wait! My bad!

If you wanna entertain a chicken, show them a camera. Don't let them peck at a lens that you could buy 900 chickens with tho. Although that would be cool.

*for a day*

05-21-chickens3

They seem very excited about the puddles, but not the rain. No one wants to go out in the rain. Cept the ducks, and I didn't want to chase them in the rain so I left them inside that day. I'm such a mean duck momma.

The ducks however, were VERY excited about a big puddle in the run. They have spent most of their day today splashing around, which reminds me I really need to get their pool set up.

(yes I know it's out of focus. It's called "Being.creative."

(It also means I wasn't actually looking through the viewfinder. I just set it on the board and snapped away.. then called it "creative")

05-21-chickens1

We have a temporary partition up between the ducks and the chickens in the coop. This is where the chickens sometimes roost, and taunt the ducks.

05-21-chickens2

Or just on the floor. Whatever feels good right?

05-21-chickens5

"This IS my happy face."

(or as Gene says, "I'm not mad, I'm light sensitive")

05-21-ducks

The ducks however, they are drama queens and part of the mean girls club. (well, cept for the boys anyway) If a chicken comes around, they tap em hard. Only sometimes do those chicks got it coming.

This is about as close as I can get to them without them flipping out on me. Really, the ring leader is the duck on the far right. "QuAcK, QuAcK, QuAcK!" Unless I have peas, and then she is first in line to be a gluttonous pig.

Peas? Srsly?
gross!

BTW, any of you locals have a dog crate you want to get rid of? I'm thinking that'll be our temporary duck home until winter. I'm too worn out to make anything, and I'm really tired of making things. I just wanna buy it and be done.

Totally disappointed when I saw a full kennel with cover for $300.
*blink*

Sigh.

PS. Gene said we should eat the drama queen duck.
I responded that we should punch him in the face.

He didn't think that was as good of idea as I did.
Go figure.

Everyone in the pool!

04-16-swim1

The ducks were upset that the chickens got to go on a field trip and they did not!

I told them it's because they run way too fast for me to catch them in the yard.
They didn't care.

04-16-swim2

So I ran some warm water in the sink, and let them have a swim.

04-16-swim4

My sink is black, and the light was shining in right on the water, so it made for some interesting photos.

04-16-swim3

I've bought them a pool, which is outside full of water, but the water is not warm enough yet for them to get to go outside.

Maybe when they are older and mind better!!

Here's a little video, mainly for my niece Stephanie that likes to watch the chicken videos.
Hi Stephanie!

I suddenly have the overwhelming urge to set the pool up!

Oh.. I'm Getting a DUCK!

So, I'm home from the hair show in St. Louis (much more about that later), but first, I want to tell you a little behind the scenes story that was going down among the crazy hairstyles, guys that think they are Paul Mitchell and 9 quadzillion women all with better hair than me.

You see, I have long hair.

Long.

Like, borderline Duggar long, but that's another story for another day. It started back in high school. My older sister was going to cosmetology school and I would go to her to cut my hair while she was in school. Why not? She had been doing it for quite a while without a license at home, and I always liked what she'd done.

My freshman year, I was there one Saturday, my sister clipping away and saying "Done!". The instructor comes along, says to my sister Chris "You did it wrong" and proceeds to cut my hair again.

Now back then, I was 15 and kind of scared to stand up to people. I didn't want my hair cut more, but I didn't have the nerve to say anything. Before all was said and done, my hair was about 3/4" all over.

Yes. It WAS hideous.
Thansk for asking.

So ever since then, I've had issues with getting haircuts. I prefer to just let it go, have some split ends and deal with it. In return, I end up with pretty long hair. It's nice that I actually quite like it long, and so does my husband.

Now having said that, I was starting to get a little paranoid before we went. Would some of the 9 quadzillion stylists in attendance request to color my hair, or even worse, would they want to *cut it*?

*shiver*

I contemplated a ball cap.
I pondered a ponytail.
I seriously considered a Tshirt saying "back off bitch"

I even relayed my concerns to Gene and he didn't take that very well. In the end, I figured a polite "no thank you" should take care of the problem.

The first day into the trip, I get a text message informing me, that for every inch of hair that I came home without, one baby chick would bite it. There were even threats that the chicks were with him in the work truck as we spoke. It escalated to the point of facebook statuses and people took sides.

Later on into the trip, I got a message that said "I'll make you a deal, if you don't cut your hair, not only will I not kill your chickens, I'll buy you 2 ducks."

OK, I was GAME.

I've wanted ducks basically since... well... I could waddle myself.

Every couple hours, I'd get a text message wanting to know the hair status, and then he insisted on seeing a photo of me, with my hair and Monday's St. Louis Dispatch as proof I hadn't cut it. (To be fair, the texting was getting a tiny bit old by the 3rd day!)

Finally, around Sunday-ish, Gene admitted that he'd already bought the ducks.

04-13-ducks2

I came home to the sweetest 4 little faces on the planet (next to Jingles).

It's pretty much been a running joke for 3 years here of "Oh, I'm getting a duck!" whenever we'd think about it. With a resounding "NO!" from Gene.

Then Tanner and I would chuckle, knowing we were slowly wearing him down.

Today, I was cleaning and found this note:

04-13-ducks1

Makes me laugh, seeing his "chicken scratches" (pun intended) of all the important things to get done over the weekend, and "DUCKS" was added, obviously important stuff.

I'm so happy!! I do believe that life is now complete.

Except for the goat.

Oh, we're getting a Goat.
