Lunar eclipse 2010 - a time lapse
During last night's lunar eclipse over north/south America (and other parts of the world got a peak too), I just happened to still be up, and the clouds departed *just* in time to get some great shots of the moon. I stepped out about every 15-20 minutes to get a shot. It was the first eclipse I've seen in years.
In return, as the moon was completely red, I stood outside I heard one lonely coyote howl, and a pack a mile away or so answer him.
Creepy.
*****
In other creepy news, a local magazine is doing an article on me and my photography... we scheduled the meet up here at my house Wednesday at 2 p.m. Imagine my surprise when I heard a knock on my door at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
The creepy part is, I was in my pajamas still, just getting ready to go run errands and my house looked like a bomb went off.
Yay me.
Look at the bright side, I no longer have to clean the house! woooot!

I Confess ....
Every kid got the opportunity to job shadow in a field they were interested in for one day. I ended up in a flower shop. Not because I was into flowers, but because I said I wanted a creative or artsy job.
Trust me, there are no art galleries in southwest Iowa.
My regional director drove us to our job locations which gave me an opportunity to chat with her along the ride. She confessed to me, that after living in Iowa for five years at that point, she'd NEVER seen a DEER!
To this day, I'm still shocked by that statement and am a little worried I let the woman drive me anywhere as she was obviously BLIND. Deer in SW IA are like dandelions, pigs or corn. They're absolutely everywhere. In fact, there's one section near my mom's home, that you have to drive about 20 mph under the speed limit during certain times of the day. One day, I counted over 30 deer in a 3-4 mile span.
It's like a class reunion and even the fat kid got invited.
The rest of the day, I kept my eyes peeled because I REALLY wanted to be the one that found a deer for her, but alas it did not happen. My advice to her was to turn your head to the left and right once in a while.
I realized later on in life, that maybe we weren't so different from each other.
You see, my shameful secret is...
I never saw a turkey my entire life, until about 3-4 years ago!
Now in my defense, I just don't ever remember turkeys being around here when I was a kid. My cousins (ne mo) talked about them all the time. My uncles were big turkey hunters. My grandfather died on his 71st birthday - and that had something to do with going into a ditch to hunt a turkey. That's been 25 years ago, so details are sketchy, but there was a turkey there. I know for sure, because mom said to keep my trap shut as it wasn't turkey season.
Oops.
I confessed this once to my mom and little sister Torrie, and mom thought I was crazy and instructed Torrie to find a turkey for me.
*This is where I started flashing back to 1986*
The first time I saw a turkey, it was actually about 6 of them. We were driving down the road, and I saw a bunch of clumps in a field. It was then, that I realized that those brown clumps were wild turkeys. And thus began my forever quest to find wild turkeys. In the fall, I scan fields as Gene drives just to see those little clusters here and there. My best so far, was about 50 turkeys in one spot, one early morning on the way to work. It was followed by a What the h....!? Look at all those TURKEYS!
Tonight, on the way home from Tanner's music program (yes, another one) right next to the road was a HUGE turkey. I had a camera! I had a long lens! The long lens was not on the camera! I shot off one, then instructed Tanner to get my lens. He takes off the cap, I switch lenses, I raise the camera (the turkey is running like hell now) and Tanner says "The lens cap is on."
*sigh*
I didn't bring him up right.
So we didn't get quite as close up as I'd like, but these are my first official ever wild turkey photos.
I might put them in my Christmas cards. (I might even be joking)

Earth day - Part deux
Yesterday, in honor of Earth Day 2009, and also in honor of it being super hot out and I just wanted to take some pics, I went out in my pj's and took some pics of my tree. The tree above is in my front yard. It's not really 98 feet high, it just looks that way. But dude, wouldn't that be cool.
I've been taking pics of this tree, from the same angle for every season, and I only have "summer" left to take. I'm thinking four 16 x 20 canvases of each season. I've become a little too addicted to large pieces of artwork.
Here he is from a different angle. Do you think that it's a "he"? I'm thinking yes.
When I was laying down and taking this photo:
I realized that I was really laying on this:

Of course, I didn't figure that out until about 15 min later that I literally had ants in my pants. LOL. I still itch thinking about it.
While I was shooting pics of the trees, Daddy Robin was having a fit. I mean a flat out, ear splitting hissy super fit. I wasn't even close to him, or Mamma Robin, at one point I turned and said "what the hell did I do to you?"
It was then that I looked up and saw this:

Of course, when I saw it, it was much closer and right over the house and about 98 times larger. Daddy Robin was going to kick some serious ass - or at least try. We *heart* guys that protect their women.
Which got me to thinking what Mamma Robin was up to, and how the baby eggs were doing. Last year, they grew up and flew away in a matter of what seemed like days. She had 2 broods last year!
So I put on the long lense again, and decide to see how close I can get to her, before she takes off on me.
I got to about here:
then an ant bit me on the butt.
Sigh.
When I moved, she flitted away. so instead I'm going to pretend like I got up this close:
which is really an extreme crop, but don't tell ppl, I want them to think I'm super stealth - or have a $29,000 lens.. one or the other. {and in case you're wondering, it's like $650 a *week* just to rent a lens like that... i looked}
So then I decided since she was gone, to see how the eggs were doing... or naked flying rat looking things. {unsure of what stage of gestation we were at at this point}
Oh looky:
Wait for it....
Wait...
Wait....
There's 4 now!!
I'm sure she's going to totally regret that. Last year two barely fit in there. I'm wondering if one is going to get pushed out :/ {I understand honey, there's been days. There have *been days*}
I'll stay on top of "Robin Cam - 2009" for you.
In the meantime, I really MUST get back to work. I let the blog distract me for 1/2 hour and I have so much to get done!

Critter check
I went to town yesterday. (and I mean that in the literal sense, not the figurative sense where I get super busy). I had to mail a package and pick up a package that I'd missed the day before (registerred international pkgs are annoying).
My gut told me I needed to take my camera - with the long lense. Especially since I missed that gaggle of turkeys on the way home on Monday. Gaggle? My gut was wrong. Not a thing exciting, except a few cows near the fence on the way home.
As you can see above, she gave me the stink eye... or is that the googly eye? No... I think it's more stinky than googly.
As you can also see, black cows make for interesting exposure. Either they are a black blob, or the area around them is completely blown out. I picked blowing out the background and cropping it out.
Long lens still on, Robin came to visit, choice was obvious. I need something besides robin pictures. They are showing *zero* interest in the birdfood I put out. hummpft.
I also, am catchin up on TANNER'S laundry. Here I thought he had more clothes than barbie, but in reality, his hamper had a bunch of sheets and blankets stuffed in it. I might put him on blanket restriction.Sooo.. I got to put some things on the line yesterday. Go me. Guess what? They are still there. LOL. Probably will have bird poop on them since I left them out so long.
And lastly, you must check out this way to make a better mousetrap story. I happened across it this morning and immediately emailed it to Tanner, who is a little bit of a Macgyver. Seriously - one of his favorite sites is a Macgyver building sorta site.
Anyway, it was good for a belly laugh.
Much to do today, like groceries and showers and dishes and such. I also need to rent some lenses for an upcoming wedding and update my website. bleh. None of that sounds appealing in theory or in practice.

MoooooooOoOooooo

I've been really inspired lately by Pioneer Woman's photos of her farm and her cattle (well, her husband's too). I've always loved cows. Maybe it's because they have those pretty big eyes, or that "perceived" docile creature (Gene has some great mean cow stories), or maybe it's just because they taste so good. :p
Anyway, so Sunday, I went out and hit the back roads trying to find some cows. It's new baby calf season and I wanted some pictures!

Well, I found some, less than a mile from here, and some of them had literally been born within hours of my photos. I could sit and watch cows all day taking pics, but you know, there's not a lot of money in cow photos :p
This little guy really checked me out, til big fat momma cow gave me that gutteral moo that could only be described as "back off bitch". This little one gave an eyeroll and a huff and stomped off.I love the little tongue sticking out.

Not a cow of course, but this cat was really interested in what I was doing. He came out, sat down and guarded *his cows*.And now lastly, the most elusive cow of all:
